Summary of key findings for parents and pupils
This is an inadequate school
Weak teaching, learning and assessment over time have resulted in pupils in key stages 3 and 4 failing to achieve as well as they should. Disadvantaged pupils' progress is weak. Their progress is well below that of other pupils nationally by the end of key stage 4. The progress of pupils who have special educational needs and/or disabilities and require additional support is also well below that of other pupils nationally. Leaders strive to ensure that the sixth form academic and vocational programmes of study meet the needs of students. However, overall students' progress is not good and therefore this phase of the school requires improvement. Prior to the arrival of the executive principal, leaders, including governors, had not tackled weaknesses in the quality of teaching or leadership to improve outcomes for pupils. Pupils' personal development, welfare and behaviour requires improvement. Pupils' self-confidence and understanding of how to be a good learner are not well developed. Where teaching does not engage pupils or teachers' expectations are low, a small minority of pupils display low-level poor behaviour. Attendance levels for pupils who have special educational needs and/or disabilities are too low. Some of these pupils have levels of persistent absence which are too high.
The school has the following strengths
The recently appointed executive principal, well supported by the new directors, is beginning to tackle weaknesses with decisiveness and rigour. This is bringing noticeable improvements across the school. Regular support and guidance helps pupils develop their citizenship skills and to identify relevant careers, education and training routes. Consequently, in these respects pupils are well prepared for life in modern Britain. Following clarification of their roles and responsibilities, senior and middle leaders have begun to take action to improve the quality of teaching and to check its impact. There are early signs that this is beginning to have a positive effect on pupils' progress. Trustees and the recently restructured local governing body are bringing improved levels of support and challenge to school leaders. Page 2 of 14
